EVA COLORNI MEMORIAL TRUST

The Eva Colorni Memorial Trust was formed in 1985 to commemorate the life of Eva Colorni, a valued friend and colleague.

Eva, in addition to much else, taught Economics at City of London Polytechnic, now part of London Metropolitan University.

For Eva, the economic problem was one of social inequality and social injustice.

Marcel

Thanks to the Eva Colorni Bursary I was able to buy books and additional materials … which greatly enhanced my learning and understanding of Economics. (I was also able to) move away from my decrepit mouldy accommodation without compromising my attendance …(This) let me focus on my study.

ACTIVITIES OF THE TRUST

The Trust was established in 1985 by Amartya Sen, close friends and family, to commemorate the life of Eva Colorni. The aim of the Trust is to reflect and further Eva's belief in the possibility of social justice. With this aim in mind, the Trust finances modest bursaries for Economics undergraduates at London Metropolitan University, where Eva worked. The trustees allocate up to ten annual bursaries, normally of sums up to £1500. Calls for applications for the bursaries are made towards the end of the autumn term each academic year and paid in January. These relatively small amounts of money make a world of difference to students living on the margins of subsistence.
The Trust also organises a series of occasional lectures on the themes of inequality and injustice. Over the past 35 years distinguished academics have given the memorial lectures. Past speakers include Ronald Dworkin, Albert Hirschmann, Eric Hobsbawm, Dorothy Wedderburn, Tony Atkinson, Gerry Cohen, Anne Phillips, Lord Desai, Mary Kaldor, Roy Foster, Vikram Seth, Lord Stern, Sudhir Anand and Arundhati Roy.
Six of the early lectures, edited by Paul Barker and including an essay by Amartya Sen, were published by Oxford University Press in 1996. Royalties from this book, Living as Equals, go to the Trust.
